Dear colleagues, let's discuss coins with mistakes. There are a lot of such examples among New Zealand coins. As opposed to other cases when all such coins from the mintage usually are destroyed NZ coins went to the circulation. They aren’t expensive and could be interesting for many types of collectors. I will illustrate only several types.

1 Penny 1945 (KM#13a) by error was minted on UK penny blank. The coin looks like burnished brass coin. Here is the example.

This mistake was made during WWII. And as I understand London Mint simply confused two types of blanks

The other very interesting case - it's the so-called strap and no-strap coin. When the young Elizabeth became the Queen in 1953, London Mint asked Mary Gillick (mint designer) to prepare a new bust of Queen Elizabeth II. It had been made and the first coins were struck in 1953 (KM#24.1 for example). One detail - there were not strap over the shoulders. As I have read the Royal Family said that it looked like very defiant. All other coins were redesigned with the shoulder strap (KM#24.2).

There are several other varieties. The mintage is unknown, but as I know it hadn't been destroyed.

High diamond. On most 1950 coins the distance between the initials of the designer (KG) and the diamond after the date is small. On an unknown number, a different die was used and the diamond sits higher. The Krause catalogue calls this variety "K.G. close to rim".

As I know there are several other varieties. Among them are: 3 Pence 1957 with 86 dots (vs standard 87 dots), 1 Florin 1946 with the flat kiwi bird back. I don't have these subtypes in my collection.
At the next post I will write about unique NZ mules and uniface coins.
